Werfa and Tair Onnen. A couple of county high points (South Wales).

Updated: May 8, 2021

13.1.2019: Werfa 568m and Tair Onnen 137m (South Wales).

This was just a damp dismal foggy day where I set out to do two South Wales county high points...

Werfa is the highest point in Bridgend county and is located just off the A4107 a few miles east of Cymmer. There is a small cutting to put 1-2 cars at the start location. Simply walk down the road to the first bend and then leave it on the left and go steeply uphill heading SW for the wind turbine. Once you get to the top of the hill there is a service road for the turbine. Cross it to get to a nearby fence. There are no styles but you cross the fence and keep heading SW to the radio/phone masts. The trig point is SW to these two masts. Retrace your path to the start. I hope you have a better day than we did as we had a total misty day and saw nothing!

Route Summary: Pretty dire as we didn't see anything.

Route Statistics: All in all a 2.2km hike with 109m height gain in 34mins.

Ascent Entry: Werfa

Tair Onnen is the highest point in the Vale of Glamorgan and is literally just off the A48 a few miles east of Cowbridge. Dead opposite Tair Onnen is a small unclassified road. Fifty meters down this road is a small factory/work unit. It was a Sunday so I managed to park here. Go back to the A48 and cross over. There is an obvious footpath here with a stone style…don’t go over this one. There is another footpath fifty meters to the right (there is a gate). Go through this and walk alongside the right side of the hedge for a couple of hundred meters. Hang a right and follow a track until you can see the trig point in the middle of the field (2-300m). This is some type of vegetable field so in summer be careful. Retrace your steps. Route Summary: A bimble over some fields.

Route Summary: An exhausting 1.22km with 9m of height gain done in 15mins.

Route overview of Werfa using ViewRanger.

Enough room for 3-4 cars at the start...

Werfa. Two radio/phone masts in the thick as heck fog behind...

Route overview using ViewRanger.

Enough room for two cars but only on Sunday as it is a commercial premises.

Over this style to the right of the gate (not the stone one to the left of this picture).

Right in the middle of a veg field...had nicer ones!
