A quick jaunt up Gwaunceste Hill (Hundred House, Mid Wales).

Updated: Oct 3, 2020

Gwaunceste Hill 542m

This was a quick blast up a hill before the forecasted heavy snow comes that will undoubtedly bring the whole country to a shud

dering stop. It is handy to have so many Marilyns on your doorstep!

Anyway the start location is am adequate lay-by on the A481 a few km’s west of Hundred House in mid

Wales. From the car park a hundred meters north east is a farm track that heads SE and leads to Rhewey farm. Go past the farm buildings and veer left through a metalled gate onto a continuation of the track that takes you steadily uphill through barren moorland for another k before you hit an intersection where you go through another gate on your right and head due south on another wide track. You have only gone about 1.3km so far and there is nothing really scenic to write home about. There are better views behind you than in front.

Carry on for nearly another 1.3km and you will see a track heading uphill to the left (east). Go up it for a few hundred meters and then look to your left (north) and you will see the trig point about a hundred meters away. After getting to the trig point I just waded through the dead bracken straight back down to the track and retraced the route back to the van.

Gwaunceste Hill is nothing to write home about. I didn’t really have the best of weather (surprise surprise!) and on the way down the snow was coming in heavily but it was a quick work out.

Parking and access: Ample roadside lay-by very close to the start point.

Route Summary: Barren broad mountain top with okay views and wide footpaths to get to the trig point. 6km up and back with 260m of ascent done in 63 minutes.

The track out of Rhewey farm...

The trig point. It will be hard to see through the high bracken in the summer I would imagine...

Snowing on the way down...

Ample sized lay-by on the A481 at the start location...
