Long Mountain or Beacon Ring. Another Marilyn around Welshpool

This hike starts at the small village of Leighton Tre’r Llai on the outskirts of Welshpool. There is ample car parking at the village school. You simply walk up through the village itself and follow my gpx trail off right through the woods until you come out on the road at Pant Y Bwch. Here you simply go up a track and hang a left at the edge of the forest going across some fields to the iron age fort which is really neat. The inner sanctum of the fort is all forest and the trig point is nestled in the middle of it. The views and walking are okay to here. You move out through the northern end of the fort and shortly after you go left into another forest. We thought we would take the footpath that runs along the edge of the forest. Don’t do this as it runs out towards the latter stages and you have to have a short fight with the forest. I have marked the map with a red arrow here. After you come out of the forest you follow the Offa’s Dyke path all the way down to Stone House farm (marked on 1:25). We then headed off south west on a variety of paths and a road to Old Hope farm. After this the paths are not as they seem and where you see my second red arrow, don’t take this detour into a small forest. We were trying to get to the road a short distance away along a marked path but it is simply not there and there is a huge ditch there that is difficult to negotiate. Simply by pass this small copse and carry on following the gpx track to the finish.

Parking and Access: Ample parking in a school car park at the start but we hiked in the holiday period so no issues.

Route Summary: Woods, roads and marked trails. Nice okay views. Route Statistics: 10.7kms, 415m of ascent done in 3 hours.
