East Coast of Ireland Trip Spring (April) 2023.

A whole lot of hiking in Eastern Ireland!

A month staying in an Airbnb near Boris in County Carlow basically hiking any Marilyns and Hewitts I had left in the area. The area being basically between Dublin and Cork and East of the M8 and M7 just West of Kilkenny.

My Facebook Summary

South East Ireland Hiking trip hiking literally anything of note in the SE of Ireland between Dublin and Cork. Quite a charming romantic area of brilliant Ireland and I wanted to finish off all the Hewitts* in the Wicklow mountains and pick up all the remaining Marilyns.* That meant a lot of driving, many wet days, lots of bog trotting and lots of forest fighting to find that elusive trig point top. It also included a puncture, a bit of a car crash, being chased by two bulls and then finally a herd of cows. I’ve had better months!

There are around 600 Hewitts and Marilyns in lumpy Ireland. All in all I managed to get 55 of them including the last 12 Hewitts in the Wicklows, 42 Marilyns and 1 SiM (600m top). Being at 138/600 I can feel a few more Irish trips coming. All in all there were 19 days of hiking with a total of 277km/172 miles of distance hiked (not that much) but with 11,000m of ascent (quite a lot).

*Marilyns: No height maximum but with a prominence of 150m (492’).

*Hewitt: Hill 610m high (2,000’) with a drop of at least 30 metres (98’)

NOTE: Highlighted mountain will take you to the Peakbagger mountain information profile, the date will take you to the Peakbagger route entry page and the Komoot link will take you to the komoot entry for that hill with pictures, highlights and full route description.
