Moel Y Dyniewyd - Last trip to North Wales to bag the remaining Nuttalls and Marilyns.

Updated: Apr 26, 2021

29.3.2021 - Moel Y Dyniewyd 382m, Beddgelert, Snowdonia (Marilyn).

Summary

After four months of being locked down here we go again. A reallyyy wet and windy bushwhacking day around beautiful Beddgelert. Welsh Marilyn no 156/158 done. A 11km 600m height gain day.

The views were nothing to write home about today but this is such a classic loop. It would be a fine outing on a blue sky day. It has a bit of everything, a beautiful little town, a great hill, lush valleys, a stunning riverside path and the iconic Gelert’s grave. A top day despite the weather!

Route

Start and Finish was at Beddgelert at the Royal Goat Hotel. A £2 fee is payable but not at the moment. There is a nearby public car park with a £3 charge for 4hrs.

The route: A road start through the village heading NE, then at Sygun Copper Mine you go up a steep hill following a small stream bed heading South. At the top of the hill go left and then on a minor and indistinct at times trail which undulates east to the summit 1.5km away. Nothing of note on the summit.

Tried to a different route back to the path and headed SW. Don't do this as we hit heavy thick gorse and it was very steep in places.

Once back at the path it’s easy all the way to the NT car park at Aberglaslyn. This could be an alternative start point and it has toilets. From here follow the Glaslyn river path on the right hand side of the river. My gps track went a bit nuts here but the path is well marked on OS maps on the right of the river looking upstream. Beware if the river is high (spate) as it can wash over the path very easily. It was ‘full’ today and it was over the path in one place. There was an up and around alternative today but any higher and you could be out of luck at several other locations. Don’t mess about on this path if your in doubt about water levels...it’s a roaring torrent of a river! Towards the outskirts of Beddgelert is the iconic gelerts grave and shortly after is the finish.

Parking: Royal Goat Hotel for a £2 fee. There is a clamping warning sign there. In addition there is a nearby public car park.

Route Summary: Road, a path that follows a mountain stream, vague footpaths and rough country to the summit. Good path down the Cwm Bychan valley.

Route Statistics: 11km and 600m of height gain done in 3hrs.

GPX files: For gpx files go to the Peakbagger website by following this link and go to the bottom right hand of the page and click ‘Download this GPS track as a GPX file.’
