North Wales - Day 3 - Moel Hebog, Moel Yr Ogof and Moel Lefn (3 x Nuttalls in Snowdonia).

16.5.2019 - Moel Hebog 783m, Moel Yr Ogof 655m and Moel Lefn 638m (Nuttalls).

This was a third hot day on the trot and it was a cracker. The hike started from the main car park in beautiful Beddgelert Ddu (£3-4hrs £6 all day to midnight. No toilets on site but there is at the railway station).

Getting away at around eight am I headed up to the railway station where I followed a trail alongside and then under it. Thereafter I followed easy signposted trails/rough road uphill and West. It’s all easy enough to follow and eventually you reach the end of the gravel road with a cottage on your left and you turn right onto the hill.

Here the looming bulk of Hebog rises in front of you and there is a good well used trail all the way to the top. It gets rocky and steep at the latter stages with minor amounts of scrambling. It’s a great hike though with beautiful views. 4kms and 750m later I was at the summit TP in a steady two hours.

Heading downhill and NW there are great views of the Nantlle Ridge to your left and the Snowdon massive to your right. More so the col you descend into is quite stunning and as you go up the other side the path takes you through a cleft in the rock. You are soon at the unmarked rocky top of Moel Yr Ogof and your heading downhill again and up to Moel Lefn where there are a series of three rocky tumps on the summit.

Now you can carry on to get off but I came back over Moel Lefn and headed down a very steep grassy gully Eastwards. My gpx trail takes you directly down it to the edge of Beddgelert forest.

I missed the edge of the forest a bit as it is not that distinct and as I wanted to get onto a forestry track just inside the boundary I envisaged a bit of a forest ‘fight’ to get onto it.

This I had but it was okay and I soon hit the track I wanted and followed it for a couple of k’s before turning off left on a rough but well marked footpath. This path takes you on a big easterly loop (way marked) to the edge of the forest again where I had less of a forest fight this time.

I was soon out on the mountainside again going across country to rejoin my up route. This I followed all the way down again back to Beddgelert. However I did go under the wrong railway tunnel to finish off the day...I was tired!

Parking and Access: Large car park at the start point.

Route Summary: Stunning village start, well marked/used mountain trails. Very rocky and steep in places. Great all round views and nice mountain ridge. Steep decent and forest trails to finish.
