27.8.2020 - Four Marilyns in the Clwydian Range. Mynydd Y Cwm 304m, Pencloddiau 440m, Moel Famau 554m and Foel Fenlli 510m.
A four Marilyn day in the Clywdian range. A very short first one and a long 20km main hike across the spine of the Clywdian hills.
Mynydd Y Cwm 304m, Denbighshire, North Wales (Marilin)
This is the most Northernmost Marilyn in the Clwydian range and I was now with my friend Andy. We parked at a small parking area at the start point, popular for walking dogs by the looks of it. It is on an UC road just South of Dyserth. Nothing special about this walk, just follow the GPX track through the woods to the top of the hill. The GPX track is spot on. No views but the top is marked by a crossed memorial to a crashed aircraft from 1947.
Parking: Small but adequate parking area at the start.
Route Summary: A short forest walk.
Route Statistics: 1.5km walk with 50m height gain done in 20 minutes.

Moel Famau Hike
Pencloddiau 440m, Moel Famau 554m and Foel Fenlli 510m (Marilyns)
This was the main hike of the day after doing Mynydd Y Cwm earlier on. It was also a typical Welsh day of rain and low cloud. A pity as I had been looking forward to this hike for a long time. The walk itself takes is an undulating North to South to south traverse of the Clwydian range which takes in a number of impressive Iron Age Forts (Pencloddiau, Moel Arthur and Foel Fenlli) as well as the jubilee towered summit of Moel Famau.
We got dropped off at the start point in Bodfari village and I must add there did not appear to be a parking point there and it is a busy A class road (A541).
This is a long hike and it basically follows the Offas dyke path all the way to the finish car park at Clwyd Gate on the A494 (plenty of parking here and free). The only detours we did was to take in some subsidiary hills in the form of Moel Arthur and Moel Eithinen.
The hike on a good day would have been a stunning day out. It was enjoyable as it was and despite the weather we had some half decent views. I won’t give a turn by turn description as the route is simple enough, well marked and on good tracks and trails. I would leave Moel Eithinen out as it is not of any interest to others really. In a nutshell a route to go back to do on a sky blue summer day.
Parking: None at the start. You can park at the finish and reverse the route.
Route Summary: A long undulating hike with great views on a sunny day. Well marked tracks and trails along the Offas Dyke path.
Route Statistics: 19.6km with 1,200m of height gain done in 6hrs 30mins.
