NW Trip.2.Day2 - Foel Goch, Mynydd Perfedd, Carnedd Y Filiast, North Top and Elidir Mawr (Glyders).

Updated: Oct 3, 2020

13.8.2020 - Carnedd Y Filiast, The Glyders, Snowdonia. A Five Nuttall day - Foel Goch 831m, Mynydd Perfedd 813m, Carnedd Y Filiast 821m, Carnedd Y Filiast North Top 720m and Elidir Mawr 924m.

This route starts and finishes in Nant Peris where there is a copious pay and display car park with toilets. £5 all day rate. The day started well when a guy asked me to pass some toilet paper to him under his cubicle door. I said ‘No’ and another toileteer guffawed ‘Owwwww that’s harsh man!’ A good laugh to start the day with!

This was to be another hot humid day with my friend Rob Kemp ticking off five Nuttalls on the Glyder massive. These were Foel Goch 831m, Mynydd Perfedd 813m, Carnedd Y Filiast 821m, Carnedd Y Filiast North Top 720m and Elidir Fawr 924m. All the hills form part of the Glyder massif that has some of the finest hiking in Wales.

Instead of doing a turn by turn description I would just say follow my gpx trail. It is pretty much spot on. You will see some ‘spikes’ on it where we momentarily went astray but only for a few meters. After a bit of route finding in the village you end up following the Afon Gafr or River Gafr up the valley. The going is okay and after a while you pick up a footpath which takes you up to the ridge just below Foel Goch. You hop over the fence and follow this up to basically an unmarked summit. Of course the views here and on the way up are stunning, this is just a magnificent part of Wales.

From here you drop down to Bwlch Y Brecan and haul your butt up the short pitch to Mynydd Perfedd. There are great views of the Ogwen valley from here. By now of course were suffering from the 30c heat but the scenery was jaw dropping despite being hazy.

From Mynydd Perfedd it was easy going to Carnedd Y Filiast but then you had the steep 100m drop down to CYF North Top and the return leg all the way back to the top again and back over to Mynydd Perfedd. From here there was the gradual but still hard climb up the imposing flank of Elidir Fawr. It was easier than we thought however and of course there was the obligatory superb views.

From the summit of Elidir Fawr you head virtually directly South over rocky ground where you soon pick up the trail that takes you all the way down into Cwm Dudodyn. Eventually, it’s a long decent, you hit a style immediately on the other side of the Afon Dudodyn. Here there are some welcome rock pools to soak yourself in and fill up with water.

After the rock pools there is a good footpath, a couple of other obvious turns and it is not long before you hit the welcome outskirts of Nant Peris.

Parking: Copious pay and display car park (that fills on weekends) in Nant Peris. £5 all day rate.

Route Summary: Marked and unmarked paths, rocky mountain trails, distinct grassy trails, some very easy scrambling. Glorious views, some of the best in Wales.

Route Statistics: 15km with 1,100m of height gain done in a humid 7 hours.
