NW Trip No.3.Day1 - Foel Cwm Sian Llwyd (Nuttall, Berwyns) & Mynydd Rhyd Ddu (Marilyn).

Updated: Oct 3, 2020

27.8.2020 - Foel Cwm Sian Llwyd 648m (Nuttall), Berwyns and Mynydd Rhyd Ddu 338m (Marilyn) near Bala, North Wales.

This was a three day trip to take in an isolated Nuttall that I had left in the Berwyns and I wanted to knock off nine Marilyns in the Denbighshire area.

Foel Cwm Sian Llwyd 648m, Berwyns (Nuttall)

Parking for this one is on the B4391 mountain road between Llangynog and Bala. There is a cutting there at the start point that you can put a couple of cars in. There are a couple of other smaller pull-ins in the area but this is the biggest so I parked here because I had my MWB Sprinter.

There is no set path or at least I didn’t find one to the top of Sian Llwyd. Once you'r parked up cross the road and follow the GPX track West. As I said there is no path, it is boggy and you will be walking through deep heather. You hit and handrail a fence for a while before crossing it. A few hundred meters past that you do hit a grassy quad bike trail as you head NW but it is not long before you will have to leave it and get back on the heather and start going uphill.

It is a fairly long slog to the trig pointed summit and then I headed East. Here there is a trail for a while but again you soon leave it and are back on the heather yet again. It is quite hard work going down hill but eventually you will get to the steep bend on the B4391 where you follow the road back uphill, along the flat and back to the start point.

Parking: As stated, a large cutting big enough for 2-3 vehicles at the start point.

Route Summary: Heather, heather and more heather, boggy ground, a few faint trails/tracks here and a bit of road work. Nice views but nothing spectacular.

Route Statistics: 5.8km, 200m of height gain in an all in time of 1hr 30mins.

Parking on the B4391 at the start point.

Nothing spectacular on this hike by way of views.

Mynydd Rhyd Ddu 389m, near Bala, North Wales (Marilyn)

I parked up in the village school of Melin Y Wig. I did ask in the village and they said it would be okay. I then basically headed East uphill on the road, through some gates and followed a farm track just below the hill before heading up to the trig pointed summit. Nothing hard and nothing special.

Parking: Village school in Melin Wig so not available on weekdays and the gate ‘may’ be closed on weekend.

Route Summary: A bit of road, a bit of track and a steep pull up a field to the TP.

Route Statistics: A 5km hike with 200m of height gain done in one hour.
