NW Trip No.3.Day3 - Hope Mountain, Moel Y Giw, Cyrn Y Brain and Moel Y Gamelin (Marilyns, Clwydian).

Updated: Oct 3, 2020

28.8.2020 - Four Marilyns on the way home. Hope Mountain 330m, Moel Gyw 467m, Cyrn Y Brain 565m and Moel Y Gamelin 577m.

Hope Mountain, Wrexham (Marilyn)

This is just a very easy isolated Marilyn just North of Wrexham. You will see an UC road at the start point and a track leading up to some masts. You can park at the road (one car) or just open the gate and drive the short but steep road up to the masts as we did. Once there we just hopped over the fence and walked the very short distance uphill to the summit.

Parking: At the mast site.

Route Summary: One field of uphill.

Route Statistics: .5km, 50m height gain in 8 minutes.

Moel Gyw 467m, Clwydian Range, Denbighshire (Marilyn)

Moel Gyw is the Southernmost Marilyn in the Clwydian range and you could easily add it on the Moel Famau traverse (from the day before). However we were like frogs the day before so I decided to make a short trip up it today.

Parking is at the Clwyd Car Park on the A494. Plenty of it and free. From here you simply cross the road and follow the Offas Dyke path/signs South. You go through a few fields and skirt alongside Moel Gyw on the Western side before coming to a bit of path junction. There is a well trodden trail going up left/North. Follow this all the way up to the trig pointed summit. You should get good views but today all I got was rain!

Parking: Clwyd car park on the A494. Free.

Route Summary: Well marked paths/trails.

Route Statistics: 4km, 200m height gain done in one hour.

Cyrn Y Brain and Moel Y Gamlin

Cyrn Y Brain 565m and Moel Y Gamelin 577m, North of Llangollen (Marilyns)

Both of these Marilyns are located just North of Llangollen and you can park at the ample but busy car parks on the Llangollen Horshoe Pass. There are car parks there for free or for customers at the Ponderosa cafe.

Both of these Marilyns can be done in the same outing by parking at the pass. I did them both in the same outing but will give separate route information for both. I had a rainy day on my outing so don’t be put off with my view comments.

Cyrn Y Brain

Basically a walk along a gravel track uphill to a long plateau. You go to the far end of the plateau and turn left along a narrow trail to the TP summit. Easy stuff.

Route Summary: Gravel/concrete track and a boggy path. Views were so so today.

Route Statistics: 7km, 206m height gain done in 1hr 20 mins.

Moel Y Gamelin

A steep hike uphill along a well trodden path over the first big lump of a hill. You then hit a wide gravel track and this drops down and up another fairly big lump of a hill to the cairned summit. Simple enough.

Route Summary: Good stiff uphill hike along a path/gravel track with good views.

Route Statistics: 5km, 325m of ascent done in 1hr 10mins.
