27.3.2019 - Mynydd Tarw 681m, Foel Wen South Top 687m, Foel Wen 691m, Tomle 741m, Cadair Bronwen 785m, Cadair Berwyn North Top 827m, Cadair Berwyn 830m, Moel Sych 827m, Moel Yr Ewig 695m, Godor North Top 675m and Godor 679m (11 Nuttalls)
Well I had planned to do this for a while too mainly because it would knock off no less than eleven Nuttalls in one fluid day on a grand horseshoe route. So the day was here and I parked up on a remote UC road about 5 kms north of Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant. Where you see the start point on the map there is a small stream and a bridge. There is a small off road parking area here for about 3-4 vehicles. Trust me as it is the only parking I could find in the whole valley.
Anyway from the park spot you head straight up the road north to the telephone kiosk (marked on the map) and then cross over and continue through the farmyard of Maes farm and follow my gpx trail up through the fields as there is a public right of way there. You will soon be on the hill panting heavily and heading straight towards Mynydd Tarw at 681m,
From here you head NW along a broad ridge line for the next 4kms and as you go along the views of the amphitheatre that is Cadair Berwyn are superb. You also start to knock off the Nuttalls of Foel Wen South Top, Foel Wen and Tomle.
Shortly after Tomle there is a footpath heading off the ridge heading North to Cadair Bronwen (I missed it) take this and within half an hour your on top of Bronwen turning round and heading south to Cadair Berwyn North Top and Cadair Berwyn. After doing so if you have a head for heights walk along the defined path on the cliff edge for further superb views down the cliff face and out over the imposing valley below. Not long after this you get to some cairns and beyond this is the trig pointed summit of Cadair Berwyn itself. So far it is simply superb….
Now head SW downhill and uphill to Moel Sych. Turn round and come back the same way but as keep your eyes open as there is a small footpath on the right that traverses down the cliff face towards Moel Yr Ewig. It is a real goat path this one and quite ‘airy’ but I loved it.
Once down to Moel Ewig you have a 5-6km trudge home and you can see the ridge going on into the distance. The path is quite indistinct in places and there are some (about two) deep bog runnels you have to negotiate but the going is okay. You soon pass Godor North Top and Godor and then the path stops and you are in farming country.
Now I did not particularly like this as there was no obvious way off the hill without trespassing according to my map. I thought there might be a footpath on the ground as it is such an obvious horseshoe…but no there is no path. Anyway I went down through the fields using the gates as I went (follow my gpx trail) and I was soon down on the road and back at my van. If in doubt on this route follow my gpx trail as it is pretty much spot on.
Route Summary: A mix of indistinct and well used footpaths along with an airy decent that in reality is safe, just don’t stumble or fall off it! Rough tussock grass in places but generally the going is good. Superb views all round and a thoroughly enjoyable outing.
Route Statistics: 18.5kms and 920m of height gain in an all time of 5hrs 50mins.
