Somerset Trip August 2022

Updated: Jan 14, 2023

Three English Marilyns and two country tops in the Somerset area during a work trip.

8.9.2022 - Selworthy Beacon 308m, Exmoor (Marilyn).

Summary

Parking is at a large car park at the end of Hill Road. This was a nice easy flat short amble with overcast clouds on established trails over hilltop moorland with commanding views of the coast and the surrounding area. Selworthy Beacon is also a trig pointed summit.

Parking: Large gravel car park at start point.

Route: Established rough tracks and trails.

Route Statistics: 2.3km with 40m of ascent in 26 minutes.

8.9.2022 - Periton Hill 297m, Exmoor (Marilyn).

Summary

Limited street parking at start point in the village of Wooten Courtney. Walk East out of the village where on the first corner is a style taking you up across the field up a hill into the forest. Follow the gpx trail up through the forest on a mix of trails and tracks (avoid my right hand spike where I was not concentrating) until you come to the summit area where you have to leave the track on the left hand side into the woods on a path to the trig pointed top. There are no views but it is a nice walk nevertheless.

Parking: Limited street parking in Wooten Courtney.

Route: A bit of road, forest trails and tracks. No view point once you are in the forest. Nice walk though.

Route Statistics: 3.3km with 183m of ascent done in 50mins.

9.9.2022 - Beacon Batch 325m, Mendip Hills, Somerset (Marilyn).

Summary

The start is at Burrington Ham car park on the B3134. Go up the road for a short distance before turning right on a good track. Follow the track until you come out on the moorland and then follow the left hedgerow again on a good trail. It won’t be long until you meet a trail going off right that takes you to the trig pointed summit. There is another trail heading south, follow this back down until you meet your up route back to the car park. A nice walk with some good views.

Parking: Good size gravel car park at the start point.

Route: A nice walking route over moorland with good views.

Route Statistics: 3.3km with 124m of height gain done in 43 minutes.

9.9.2022 - Blagdon Hill Farm 242m, North Somerset (County High Point)

Summary

The hilltop is not discernible and situated in the middle of the road in Leaze Lane just off the B3134 on the Mendips near Beacon Batch Hill. The most uninspiring of County Tops. Three minute walk from the end of the lane. No photos worth taking.

Parking: At bottom of the lane.

Route: UC road.

Route Statistics: .2 km in three minutes flat.

Route Overview.

9.9.2022 - Niver Hill (boundary) 264m, Bath and North East Somerset (County High Top).

Summary

Parking is at a forestry car park entrance or the car park depending on the height restriction of your car. Then you walk down the road North a short while before turning right along a farm road. About 500m later you veer left into a field on a footpath. You then follow the footpath for another 500m or so. There is a corner to the field on the right and this is the closest you can get to the high point. Not exactly riveting stuff!

Parking: Forestry England East Harptree Car Park entrance. Limited to one car unless your car is under 1.98m whereby you can enter the car park.

Route: A bit of road, a farm track and then across some fields on a footpath.

Route Statistics: 2km round trip with 40m of ascent in 23 minutes.

Ascent Entry on Peakbagger: Niver Hill
