An amble in Bodmin up Brown Willy.

5.5.2021 - Day 8

Brown Willy 420m, Bodmin Moor (Marilyn and County HP).

Summary

Access is down an UC road to an amply sized car park that does get busy. No fees. This was a hike that would give me another Marilyn and the highest point in Cornwall.

From the car park you head South over some paths/open ground to Logan Rock. From here head go along indistinct trails for another few km’s to the squared antiquity of King Arthur’s hall. It is all pretty undulating so far.

Head East from the said Hall (which is basically a square mound with standing stones) towards some woods passing some small standing stones on the way. Go through the woods over the river (there is a small bridge) and up Garrow Tor. At the top of Garrow Tor head East again downhill to a river where there is a very old stone bridge. This is a good rest point.

Go up and over the hill behind the bridge and head towards the corner of the field where you start to pick up the path going up the rocky lumpy back of Brown Willy. It starts to get steeper now but it is easy enough and the lumpy terrain makes it interesting. Eventually you will get to the crown of Brown Willy which is a nice trig pointed summit.

Coming down of the summit you can see Rough Tor to the NE about 1.5km away. Enjoy this segment of the walk as the views are quite beautiful. Rough Tor is rocky and has some impressive rock formations and again the views are joyful. You then have a short but sharp decent and a moderate walk back to the car park. If you follow my gpx trail you will hit all the bridges and gates on the route.

Parking: Ample car park at start point. No fees.

Route Summary: Good paths, no paths, easy open terrain ‘but’ could get very boggy in prolonged bad weather. Lots of antiquity gems on the way round. Good views. This is an enjoyable walk.

Route Statistics: 13.3kms with 400m of height gain done in 3hrs 23mins.

Gpx File:

First half of the walk across to King Arthur's Hall (Antiquity) and over to the bottom of Garrow Tor.

Hiking up Brown Willy's lumpy back bone and the summit.

The last section from Brown Willy over to Rough Tor and to the finish.
