Aconbury Hill, Seager Hill, Hegdon Hill and Burton Hill (4 x Marilyns around Hereford).

Aconbury Hill 276m, Seager Hill 272m, Hegdon Hill 255m and Burton Hill 294m.

This was a day tour driving in a big loop around Hereford and seeing as I live in Brecon it was close to home too.

Aconbury Hill.

This was the first one being the closest and I parked up in a cutting right by the route footpath. This was on an UC road just East on King’s Thorn village. There is only room for one vehicle so if it is full go back to the village as there is a community hall there with parking. It was busy when I was there.

Anyway, head north through Wallbrook wood and after a km you come out at a pretty lake belonging I presume to Aconbury Court. Turn left (W) here on the road and shortly after you turn off SW on a path towards Aconbury wood. Once in the woods you can follow my trail which is a wide forest track or go a myriad of other ways. My route took a big loop before turning left (N) at the W of Warren Farm marked on the OS 1:25. This path takes you all the way to the Iron age fort at the top. Not much to see as the rampart is pretty overgrown. Head East and you will see the TP. There are okay views from here!

After this head South on a good trail and you end up at a chapel and cross over the road to follow a lane for about a km before you hang a hard left heading towards Merrivale Farm. You leave the lane on the left shortly (footpath sign) and cross over two fields back to the start point.

Route Summary: Pleasant walk on lanes, forest tracks and footpaths. The woods (owned by the Duchy of Cornwall) are pleasant enough as are the views.

Route Statistics: 7km with 215m of ascent one in 1.5hrs.

Seager Hill.

Seager was about half an our NE of Aconbury and I parked my van outside some sort of hostel/scout premises(?) in Woollhope Cockshoot (not far from Ledbury) as I wasn’t going to be long. Well until somebody pulled up and asked to have a look round my van conversion!

Once I got going it was a simple case of walking NW along the road for a km before taking a right turn at a gate. Then it was literally walking uphill through a forest for another km to the TP. The TP is in a field with pretty countryside views.

Route Statistics: 4.2km’s with 100m of height gain done 47mins.

Hegdon Hill.

This was about a 45 minute drive North from Seager and it was in the middle of nowhere on the back roads half way between Bromyard and Leominster. Parking was by the side of a UC road and it was a question of nipping over the fence and walking up a path through a field about 200m to the TP. Half decent views.

Route Summary: A walk through a field of turnips!

Route statistics: If you take more than 5 mins then you need to workout more!

Burton Hill.

The last one was another 45 minute drive heading West via Leominster towards the Weobley area. Then head south on the B4320 to the indistinct start point which is a gateway large enough for me to park my van there without blocking anybody.

Walk back towards Weobley and hang a short right up a lane and just keep on heading uphill until you get to the woods. My intention was to follow the footpath marked on the OS but it was overgrown with felled trees so I headed across to a foresty track/road. I simply follow this to a junction turned right and carried all the way to the TP at the top. No views as your in a forest.

Route Summary: Pretty dull walk up through a forestry with a no view summit.

Route Statistics: 3.2kms with 150m of height gain done in 42mins.

...and then it was another 45 minute drive home :-)
