Hensbarrow Beacon, Carnmenellis and Watch Croft. Three Cornish Marilyns in a day.

Updated: May 30, 2021

4.5.2021 - Day 7.

Hensbarrow Beacon 312m, St Austell (Marilyn).

Summary

This was a quarry area near the village of Roche. The access road is actually quite busy with lorries but there is adequate room. Parking was a rough car park at the start point with enough room for about 3-4 vehicles.

Basically head East on an obvious trail. Keep going for about 500m, go up a small hill and viola there is your trig point. The surrounding area of Hensbarrow Down appears to be higher than the TP but this will do.

Parking: Rough car park for 3-4 vehicles.

Route Summary: Easy short track, nothing special.

Route Statistics: 1km with 10m of height gain done in 12mins.

Carnmenellis 252m, Redruth (Marilyn).

Summary

The start point was near the village of Four Lanes and there was a small lay-by at the start point big enough for 2-3 vehicles.

Walk on the road around the corner and go up a farm lane. Follow the path and turn right, shortly after you will see a gate and a house in front of you. The path actually goes past the house on the ‘immediate’ left as you look at it and there is a stone wall beyond with some stone steps. Once on the common pick your own way to the summit across rough fern infested ground. In the summer with full growth this will be like Vietnam without the snakes. Anyway the summit has a trig point near some masts but there are no views of note. Retrace your steps.

Parking: Lay-by at the start point for 2-3 vehicles.

Route Summary: A bit of road, track and a full field of ferns and brambles. No views.

Route Statistics: 2km, 50m height gain done in 30mins.

Watch Croft 252m, St Just (Marilyn).

Summary

This is a pretty isolated Marilyn and I believe it is the most Southernmost one in the UK. It sits on the coast roughly half way between St Just and St Ives. There is a pretty large car park at the start point but it was full when I got there, including two big buses but I still managed to find room in a nearby lay-by.

From the start point walk down the road a short way before turning left along a good path. There are no paths marked on the map to the summit from the path you are on so I made my own way. I will not describe this way however as my down route includes a substantive path that is not marked on the map. Basically carry on this original path until you see another equally good one going off to the right adjacent to stone walls. This will take you all the way up to the trig pointed summit (my third of the day) where there are lovely views.

Parking: Large car park and some lay-bys.

Route Summary: Good path, good coastal views and some interesting mine workings at the start point.

Route Statistics: 2.64km with 113m of ascent done in 38mins.

Gpx File:

There are some old roadside mine workings near the start point. There is a very large lay-by here but when I was there there were two big buses parked taking up most of the space.
