Peak & Lake District Sojourn. Day 15.

Haycock 797m, Little Gowder Crag 733m, Caw Fell 697m and Iron Crag 640m.

Summary

Well I would rather forget the first day in the lakes really. A half decent weather forecast day turned into driving wind and rain and absolutely no high views literally past your nose.

Plenty of parking at the start at the Bleach Green Car Park and it is free. No height restrictions either. The first hour or so was spent traversing lake Ennerdale along a nice rocky undulating footpath and then it was turn right into the forest to follow on an easy to follow trail. Not long after you cross a small bridge and carry on uphill through the forest.

Once out of the forest you come out on the hill and not long after this is when the rain started. This is also where I realised my old iPhone holder was leaking (A LifeProof one). No problem as I have a back up Garmin GPS…well no, because I forgot it in the airbnb. Anyway…on we go with a half function phone and a bit of dead reckoning which went a tad wrong as I veered towards Caw Fell. No problems as I retraced and headed uphill for the wet and windy slog to Haycock. It was quite hard going in the weather on the rocky path I took which followed a wall. Once at Haycock I took my photo and followed the same wall then all the way down and over to Little Gowder Crag and then onwards to Caw Fell and Iron Crag. The wall came in very handy!

Once at Caw Fell I decided to call it a day and took a direct line steeply down to Silvercove Beck to the East to follow it down all the way North back into the forest. I guessed it would not be that easy but it was easier than I thought with feint trails to follow most of the way. I eventually came back to the bridge in the forest and from there. I retraced my steps all the way back to the start point.

It was a pity about the weather as a decent day would have seen some beautiful photos on this route. The views down to the lake and the surrounding mountain vistas should have been superb. One to come back for I suppose. The rest of the country was apparently enjoying sunshine…buggery!

Parking: Large free car park at the start.

Route: Great lakeside walk, nice forest section and decent hill trails. Can’t comment on views.

Route Statistics: A hard rain swept 22.5km, 1,000m height gain in an all in time of 6hrs 26min.

Info sheets

The only pictures I had were lakeside.

Haycock, Caw Fell and Iron Crag. Sorry the best I could do today!
