Peak & Lake District Sojourn. Day 16.

Grike 488m, Crag Fell 528m and Lank Rigg 541m, Western Fells Wainwrights.

Summary

Another day of driving rain and winds above 350 meters. Still got in three of the Westernmost Wainwrights though. A pity as this is beautiful fell country. Some of the valley views were stunning. Nothing much by way of photos though I’m afraid.

Parking was in a small pull in at the start point on the Ennerdale to Calder road. Big enough for 2-3 cars and there are a few other pull in places in the area. As for the route, head up the road and turn right on a bridle way that heads into a forestry. Just follow this track all the way through until you come out just below Grike. There is a wide visible footpath then that veers off left or NE all the way to the top of the cairned summit and shelter of Grike. I couldn’t see nothing here due to the weather.

From Grike I headed off East on another visible but not so wide footpath that followed a fence line. I then veered left on another trail that took me to the cairned summit of Crag Fell. Another no see nada view point for me!

The footpath down from Crag Fell was a bit more indistinct but it goes down SE to the forest or what is left of the forest as it has been cut down. However the trail is good and just follow it until you come to a gate. Once past the gate the path gets fainter but if you follow my gpx trail SW up to Whoap then you won’t go far wrong.

From here you go steeply down hill to the SW to a col between Red Gill and Whoap Beck and then go back up steeply to the trig pointed summit of Lank Rigg. Still no views for me. Retrace your steps down to the col and then hang a left or NW down Whoap Beck where there is a very distinct footpath. You then have a beautiful valley view for the last 3km leg back to the road where your start point will not be far away.

Parking: A small 2-3 car pull in at the start point. A variety of other small lay-bys nearby.

Route: Good forest tracks, hill trails and good last 3km trail. In between trails ranging from feint to distinct single path trails. Can’t comment on the views.

Route Statistics: A very wet and windy 12.5 kilometres with 600m of height gain done in three hours flat.
