Peak & Lake District Sojourn. Day 20.

Fellbarrow 416m and Low Fell 423m, Lake District (Wainwrights)

Summary

This was a short outing as there wasn’t any parking for the plan A route (deadly here on weekends) so this was the plan B nearby alternative. This might be an itsy bitty route but it is big in vistas being snuggled amongst a veritable arena of nearby mountains along with overviews of beautiful Crummock Water and Loweswater lake . It was an overcast day so the light wasn’t brilliant and the summits were a bit hidden for classic photo shots. However a very beautiful hike outing and a nice shakedown walk after yesterdays long day on the hill.

Parking was on a back road in Thackthwaite village, a longish side of the road pull in that can take 4-5 cars but maximum size would be for a VW campervan. Go back South through the village and you will see a path heading uphill West. You go through some fields and it is not long before you come to a small gate and a good wide path that veers right or North. You simply follow this path in a long uphill loop to the left. There is a couple of zig zags and then the undulating last kilometre with two fences to surmount to the cairned top of Low Fell. Here you have a beautiful vista of Crummock Water nestled within an amphitheatre of mountains.

Retrace your steps to the first fence and you will see a smaller footpath veer off to the left where it soon abuts a fence line which you follow over Smithy Fell, down and up again steadily to the trig pointed summit of Fellbarrow. The views from Low Fell are much more majestic. Anyway to get off head North and follow the fence around to the right and downhill on a footpath where you eventually cross a small stream and rejoin your ascent path which you follow back to the start.

Parking: A pull in for about 4-5 cars. Narrow.

Route: Lovely wide grassy track and footpaths.

Route Statistics: A nice little 7.5km amble with 450m of ascent in 1.5hours.
