Peak & Lake District Sojourn. Day 37.

Illgill Head 609m and Whin Rigg 535m, Wasdale Head, Lake District (Wainwrights).

Summary

After yesterday’s epic blue sky mountain day we were looking forward to an easier mountain day but another day of similar views. The route was to take in Illgill Head and Whin Rigg both Wainwright tops on a distinct high ridge overlooking majestic Wast Water. At 7am we set off in gorgeous sunshine (see pictures) and by 8.30am we were on Illgill Head and we couldn’t see 50m and it stayed like that until we came down again. What a bummer! After that it was a nice lakeside walk back all the way to the NT car park. Still, I had great company and it was a very enjoyable day out in majestic surroundings.

Parking: National Trust car park with toilets and mini shop.

Route: An easy enough route to follow with distinct paths for most of the way. Indistinct paths on occasions. Sharp 550m of height gain at the start but an otherwise easy’ish day. Should be stunning views on a fine day.

Route Statistics: A 14.75km day with 635m of height gain done in 5 hours.

OS view of route

The way up on a stunning morning

We saw absolutely nothing from the top. In less than an hour and a half the cloud had come in from nowhere.

Once we came down the views cleared up.
