Shropshire Trip. Day 1.

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

Burrow 358m, Hopesay, Shropshire (Marilyn).

Summary

The start point parking for my MWB Merc Van was in the village of Hopesay next to the rectory of St Mary’s Church. I did however ask for permission. I will point out that the highlight of Burrow is that it has an excellent Iron Age Hill Fort on the summit.

As far as the route goes there is a path directly West heading uphill away from the church. The gpx track is straight forward enough to follow until you get into the forest at Beaches Hollow. Here you do have to keep an eye out as the path on your left is slightly out of sight at this time of year but it is there over the fence. You then go down a narrow path through the thick vegetation of the forest (its summer) and back uphill and then follow a wider path around to the East until you get to a wooden gate. This is the entrance to the hill fort. Go through and there is a path that takes you up and around the unmarked summit. This is a fine example of a multivallate Hill Fort with several entrances and ramparts. It is overgrown and not maintained and there are no information boards which is a pity. There are nice views from the top.

Retrace your steps to the wooden gate and head SW on a wide track. You turn East at the bottom and then follow a trail out of the forest until you hit a wide bridleway that takes you through fields back into Hopesay. The bridleway does get overgrown in the latter stages as the bridleway narrows between hedgerows and the vegetation is thick.

Parking: Permission of rectory owner only. One vehicle.

Route: Good bridleways, overgrown at some stages. Some narrow paths again overgrown in the forest. An unmarked summit but quite a grand hill fort, again somewhat overgrown.

Route Statistics: 6km, 285m of height gain done in 1hr 30mins.
